Cleaning ourselves up
On Friday afternoon, Mom and I undertook a task that we’ve been wanting to do for a while. Our steady stream to more organic living has taken us to the road of soap making. We wanted to make sure that soap making would not only be healthier but we were hoping it would be less expensive in the long run, and so far it has. We used the recipe from The West Ladies on their tutorial video Home Stead Blessings The Art of Soap Making.

There is something so gratifying about making your own soap and waiting proudly as it cures for two weeks. Our first batch turned out lavender colored (we think it was from the vegetable shortening that we used) and we ended up with 28 nice sized bars. We didn’t put any scent into it, though we added the suggested oats for moisturizer and cinnamon for colour, though it only turned out a darker lavender. Our next batch will probably have some essential oils for scent, but right down we’re going to test with plain soap.

The soap looks fantastic! We have yet to attempt homemade soap, although some good friends of the family have.
Have a good evening!

Oh! How wonderful! I’ve been looking into soap making myself of late.
Our family invested some money (quite a bit for us) in some homemade soaps from online awhile ago and we just LOVED them! Unfortunately, they really are too pricey to get all the time and use all the time.
*sniff*.
So, I’d like to really make our own to save us money.
I just recently saw that one of the video’s by the West Ladies was a soap making one…so now I’ll have to check into that further.
Thanks for your “review”!
I’d love to get the whole set of their video’s someday…they all look wonderful!
Enjoy your soap!
It looks like it still came our great!
God Bless!

Isn’t soap-making fun? We need to do it again. I’d like to add some lavender or springy scents. Mmmm.

The top picture looked a little like fudge at first. Then I read . . . I don’t think I want to eat soap.

Glad you had fun making it.

We thought the same…they’re curing in Mom’s room and she said it’s like walking into a room with giant pieces of purple fudge!
Along that line… My mom makes goat milk soap - and there is a lovely fragrance oil she used to have called “Creme Brulee” - not only did the soap look like fudge, it smelled like it… Well, as the story goes, someone we know had some of it in their shop, and some poor lady actually tasted it before they could stop her… We only use essential oils now… for a host of reasons…
Your soap looks like it turned out absolutely wonderful!
Yes, that top picture does look like fudge.
I am glad that it set up for you and not like my first batch. That was a odd batch for sure.
Isn’t so interesting and satisfying to learn how to make things from scratch.
